Background Information
Programs
Residencies
As well as a solo performance, White Lies is available as a residency
for college and university campuses. On-site, the playwright-performer,
director, and stage manager lead a volunteer group (students, faculty,
staff, and community members) through a workshop designed to elicit
their own stories, and a series of theatre exercises.
The experience culminates in the reworking, rehearsal, and performance
of a unique version of White Lies, with participants sharing their
own stories as an integral part of the piece. The post-performance
discussion involves the entire community.
The first White Lies residency was completed at Colby College in
the fall of 2001.
Curriculum Connections
The playwright-performer is available to work with schools and
universities as a visiting instructor, from graduate courses in
social work to college racism studies to high school Theatre and
Creative Writing classes. Approaches include Writing Whiteness
exercises, theatre explorations, discussions, and sharing stories.
Workshops
White Lies can be presented as the kick-off event for the
study program entitled White People Confronting Racism: Vision
to Action. Developed by the Maine chapter of the National
Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), this program guides participants
through a series of awareness raising activities, culminating in
the development of action plans for projects addressing personal
or institutional racism. For more information, contact Diane Gilman,
Director, NCBI/Maine at dgilman@gwi.net.
